WASTE NO MORE TIME…
We here at Salt Of The Earth are founded on an enduring quote by the revered Stoic, Marcus Aurelius (121 – 180 AD). Among the countless teachings Marcus gives us in his esteemed classic, Meditations, we are forever guided by the venerable… “Waste no more time arguing about what a good man should be. Be one.”
Simple. Inspiring. Unassuming. And direct. What does Marcus’s quote mean to you? For us, it embodies the belief that we are all born into this world with a moral compass that guides us to what is true and just. Marcus teaches us that time spent debating opinions is wasted, and he is also teaching us that even with countless differing viewpoints we might have for what is right in the world, we should all agree on a profound and visceral level of what it truly means to be good, in every sense of the word. This primordial intuition of fellowship toward our friends, colleagues, neighbors, and community has emerged us to the organized state of humanity as we know it today. This embedded compass of which we are all gifted, regardless if past actions and misfortunes have led us off course, we can recollect ourselves and focus on our innate ability to know what it means to be a good man, and take action to get back on course.
When Marcus wrote this for himself, he did so in an effort to guide himself and remain on course during times of hardship. Marcus was no mythical figure or spiritual being having no faults. He was human, gifted with the same moral compass as you and me, and a man with a keen sense of awareness for his actions and treatment toward his fellow man. Let this remind you that the simple, inspiring, unassuming, and direct teaching from Marcus Aurelius was born from the challenges and difficulties every man faces during the journey of his life. Let this be the proverbial North arrow of your compass that guides your choices and actions to what you know to be good. In doing so, we can rest in peace knowing we have been grateful for the gift of good Character we have been given and have left our mark on this world for what it means to be a good man.
